Architect Tara Prasad Dhal from Odisha Receives Iconic Healthcare Architect of the Year 2024 for Trauma Care Facility in Panikoili
Jajpur / Bhubaneswar: Odisha architect Tara Prasad Dhal has been honored with the prestigious Iconic Healthcare Architect of the Year 2024 award for his inclusive design of the Trauma Care Facility at Panikoili, Odisha and Cancer Care Facility,Bargah, Odisha. The accolade was conferred by the esteemed jury of “Brandscouncil Ratings” during the South Asia Pacific Healthcare Summit & Business Awards 2024. The award, recognizing outstanding contributions to specialized healthcare architecture, was announced virtually on November 23, 2024.
The Trauma Care Facility, located on a 7.07-acre site along National Highway-16 at Panikoili, Jajpur, is a testament to innovative design and engineering excellence. The state-of-the-art (G+5) hospital block was commissioned by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Odisha, representing the state’s first government-built healthcare facility to receive such national recognition.
The building, with a total built-up area of approximately 2,10,000 square feet, incorporates cutting-edge architectural design aligned with national and international guidelines. Constructed on a site initially 20 feet below the highway level, the facility includes a 25-foot-wide paved driveway, pedestrian pathways, separate parking areas for visitors and ambulances, and multiple entry points tailored for specific functions such as emergency care, IPD access, and service deliveries.
Innovative Design Features: The Trauma Care Facility boasts a T-shaped layout and integrates modern infrastructure, including centrally air-conditioned spaces, a comprehensive medical gas pipeline system, rainwater harvesting, and an efficient sewerage and effluent treatment system. Its thoughtful design prioritizes both functionality and patient comfort. Key facilities include:
Five fire exit staircases and a dirty staircase with utility lift access
Four 26-passenger hospital lifts and ramp provisions for accessibility
Separate toilets for staff, patients, visitors, and persons with disabilities
Functional Highlights: The hospital accommodates 200 beds across its five floors, with each level strategically designed for specific medical functions:
Ground Floor: Stilt parking, central kitchen, dietary section, and maintenance facilities
First Floor: Emergency services including triage, trauma ICU, rabies and burn emergency care, and diagnostic wings for CT, MRI, and X-ray
Second Floor: Modular operating rooms and burn injury wards
Third Floor: ICU facilities, administrative offices, blood bank, and physiotherapy services
Fourth and Fifth Floors: General wards, cabins, and departmental offices
A Milestone in Odisha’s Healthcare Infrastructure: Constructed at a cost of ₹101 crores, the project was completed within two years, from January 2022 to February 2024, under the execution of Bargarh (R&B) Division and contractor B P Construction Pvt. Ltd., Ranchi.
