SICKLE CELL AWARENESS PROGRAM” JOINTLY LAUNCHED BYUTKAL ALUMINA AND DISTRICT ADMNISTRATION RAYAGADA


In a significant move to address the challenges posed by sickle cell disease, Utkal Alumina International Limited, in collaboration with the District Administration of Rayagada, launched a comprehensive Sickle Cell Awareness Program on 3rd November 2023. The initiative was inaugurated by Smt. Swadha Dev Singh, District Collector and Magistrate Rayagada, in the presence of Mr. Mazhar Beig, Unit Head and President Utkal Alumina, and Dr. Lalmohan Routroy, CDMO Rayagada.


The program aims to create awareness among priority groups such as antenatal women, spouses, babies, and adolescents about sickle cell disease and motivate them for screening. The first phase of the initiative will cover the entire Kashipur block, where villagers will be sensitized through street plays, public announcement systems, wall paintings, and screening camps. The disease screening will also be conducted for high school boys and girls by the District Health Department.


Mr. Rajesh Pattnaik, DPM NHM Rayagada, provided an overview of the status of sickle cell disease in Kashipur block and Rayagada District, highlighting the National Sickle Cell Mission and its agenda for the district. Smt. Swadha Dev Singh expressed gratitude to Utkal Alumina for the collaborative effort and emphasized the importance of community health and wellbeing. She urged the team to work towards 100% screening of sickle cell disease in the next six months.


Sri Mazhar Beig, Unit Head & President Utkal Alumina, emphasized the collaborative efforts between the district administration and Utkal Alumina in addressing health crises. He expressed the organization's dedication to making a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by Sickle Cell Disease and announced the initiation of sickle cell screening facilities at Utkal Hospital shortly. Dr. Lalmohan Rautroy, CDM&PHO, Rayagada, appreciated Utkal Alumina for contributing to the national agenda and expressed confidence in jointly eradicating the disease.


The program, coordinated by Ms. Niharika Sahu, Department Head CSR Utkal Alumina, involved the entire CSR team of Utkal Alumina in its successful execution.
